Over
the years, The Lloyd Company has sold everything from farm tractors to scented
candles to couches. When Byron Lloyd's grandfather, Floyd Drummond, began the
business as Drummond Implement Co. in the late 1930s, he sold farm implements,
GMC trucks, Pontiac automobiles and a full selection of hardware.
His
grandfather opened stores in Portsmouth, Washington Court House, Chillicothe and
Hillsboro, but the store in Bainbridge remained the primary store. "At one
time, he was the largest implement dealer in the world, Lloyd says.
His parents, Ed and Jane Lloyd, took over the store in 1956 and changed the
name to The Lloyd Co. They expanded the hardware department and his mother added
a gift collection.
At that time, the implement business was changing
with more factory-owned stores. So his parents gave up that segment of the business,
but still sold Pontiacs.
In
the early 1970's his parents gave up the Pontiac dealershipand changed the automobile
showroom into a furniture section.
"I started working here when
I was big enough to push buttons on a cash register, Lloyd says. By 1990,
he took over the business, and in 1993, he opened a Chillicothe store on Water
Street.
The Bainbridge store still sells hardware along with gifts, household
goods, collectibles and furniture.
The store is unusal, in that it only
has one sale a year, on New Year's Day. Instead of holding constant sales, the
furniture is always sold at 40 percent below the manufacturer's suggested retail
price. On the yearly, one-day sale, the store is packed!
